Blog: My Battle Against Insulin Resistance

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few years back. I never really took it seriously and just continued about life.

It was not on my mind as I have never experienced any of the typical side effects aside from high blood sugar readings.

A year ago my A1C was 12.9. I know, I know, that’s crazy. Yesterday, my lab results showed me being at a 9.5. Now that’s still high but it is an improvement. My doctor finally started me on insulin.

Over the years, I’ve been researching insulin resistance, which is apparently what my body is doing.

What is insulin resistance? Insulin resistance is the name given to when cells of the body don’t respond properly to the hormone insulin. That means that your body no  longer responds to insulin when you consume food throughout the day.

A few months ago, I started eating a purely plant based diet, completely removing meat and dairy products. The changes were immediate. I had more energy, and my blood glucose levels dropped significantly. Even now, with my readings normal, my A1C still remains high, but I think it is coming into where it needs to be.

What I call, “The Rocky Mountain High” is now gone. This is where your glucose levels are crazy high when you wake up. My readings are usually 100-130 for me now. The other benefit I should mention is that I have lost over 70lbs with minimal exercise.
